Love at First Listen: A Valentine’s Day Playlist

Love is in the air — that can only mean one thing — Valentine’s Day is here! The holiday of love is the best. Everything is colored pink and red, all the candy goes half off on February 15th, and most importantly, you get to spend time with the people you love most. This is why — just in time for this holiday season — I’ve brought you the best Valentine’s Day song recommendations, in hopes you’ll also think Valentine’s Day is as bewitching as I do.

Whether you’re single, taken, or heartbroken, Valentine’s Day can be enjoyed by everyone. My first pick, for example, is relatable to just about anyone who’s ever been in love: “Evergreen (You Didn’t Deserve Me At All)” by Omar Apollo. This song follows a lovesick hopeless romantic torn by unrequited feelings of love for a person who isn’t good for them. The song is very bittersweet, as its melody and instrumental is very slow and romantic, while the lyrics are very somber and distraught. The complexity and emotion that’s shown through the lyrics and arrangement perfectly encapsulate the feeling of Valentine’s Day for everyone — from bitter, heartbroken people to star-eyed lovers who are head over heels for someone.

If you really want to feel the romance of Valentine’s Day and not just eat chocolate all day, then my next pick will be perfect for you. “A Couple Minutes” by recently Grammy-winning artist, Olivia Dean, is the perfect song for people in relationships or who are just feeling a little romantic. This song’s soft vocals and relaxing instrumental make the song feel so romantic — you almost forget the lyrics are actually about a breakup. However, this song being about love is undisputed, as the song’s lyrics describe reminiscing about loving and caring about someone before parting. This song’s sweet, calming chorus makes whoever’s listening to it unable to resist thinking about love, and it’s the perfect song to listen to while writing your Valentine a heartfelt card.

I hope that no matter what you’re doing this Valentine’s Day — whether it’s going on a date, getting ready for a party, or just hanging out at home eating candy — this Valentine’s Day playlist still uplifts you and reminds you how wonderful love is. My wish is that after listening to this playlist, you’ll see how great Valentine’s Day is for everyone, whether you’re taken or not.
