Tonight I played “Don’t Stop The Music” by Rihanna to start my last show of Electrick Black and ended it with “Don’t Stop The Music” by Yarbrough & Peoples. Simply because I didn’t want to stop. I put a lot of my heart into this show and I didn’t realize how emotional I’d be during the finale. I made this show with Dravon (DreamyDre) because he was one of the few people who understood what I was trying to do and was willing to help me carry it out. We wanted to make a platform for black artists who have contributed, collaborated, and focus(ed) on Disco, Electronic, Dance, House, EDM and more. Most of the mainstream DJs of EDM today are typically European, cis, straight and male. The only other PoC major player on that level I can think of is Afrojack. Rarely do you find likes of King Britt, Carl Cox, George Ascota, araabMUZIK, Felix Da Housecat and SO MANY other DJs on those big stages. And that’s not even including DJ’s who are woman, especially more so for WoC DJ’s. We wanted to shed some light on that YES there and have been black EDM artists out there, that didn’t just start in Hip Hop and R&B, but started with 4 on the floor album or single or feature. We even had some shows when we played PoC in the genre and women in the genre. I guess what I’m trying to say is….. I’m gonna miss this show. Because this was a concept show that I truly believed in, that actually inspired and educated other people as well as entertained. So my take away is that I’m proud of the work I did with this show, even if only for a short time and I’m happy to have done it with Dravon. I will continue to try and musically educate people show them black people aren’t just Hip Hop, aren’t just Rap, aren’t R&B. We are music. House, Dance, and more are just few I’d like to show you.
