If you’re gonna do a show about Caribbean music you must include some Steel Pan! Steel Pan is the national instrument of Trinidad & Tobago. Created from 55 gallon industrial drums, steel pans are the only instruments made to play in the “Pythagorian” musical cycle of fourths and fifths.
I love the sweet sound of the steel pan. My father (and co-producer) William Phillip was a legendary pan man and member of Highlanders Steel Orchestra. And my uncle Lenox Phillip is the founder of Pan Ivory Steel Orchestra in Queens, New York. I grew up on this music, surrounded by legendary pannist and historians such as Bertie Marshall and Leslie Slater and listening to the stories of the Pan greats. To me nothing represents the Caribbean more than the sweet, sweet sound of a Steelband. It makes every day seem like Carnival.
