An imperfectionist says, “Expectations are not rules.” Genesis Strother’s mother, Shamonda Strother,
ensured that she was aware of this fact. The CEO of You Can Fit Out 2 has extensive experience in
youth empowerment and the entertainment industry. So, to no one’s surprise, she is an avid
supporter of the self-proclaimed “imperfectionist” and her musical endeavors. Strother began her
singing career at the age of five. Her parents started her in vocal lessons and the church choir at the age of eight. These early foundations would prove essential as Strother developed her unique
approach to music—one that embraces imperfection as strength rather than weakness.
An imperfectionist says, “Do something small every day.” For Strother, everything was in the works
for a while. She wrote Imperfect Harmony in the 10th grade. From there, she stuck with it and revised
what she needed as her skills improved. When you’re younger, you don’t realize who your biggest
supporters are, but, when it’s down to business, they’re the ones with the plan. Her mentor, Johnna
Jeong, is an actress, composer, and guitarist. Under Jeong’s guidance, Strother learned that
consistency in small efforts can lead to profound artistic growth.
This philosophy of incremental progress shapes not only Strother’s creative process but also
her musical influences. The sound is strongly inspired by Alex Isley, H.E.R., and Leon Thomas. But
no artist has influenced her approach to authenticity more than Alicia Keys. Keys represents
everything Strother admires about artistic integrity: she successfully blends elegance and urban
styles. While many artists are forced to find a box to fit, and to sacrifice for an image—a brand
—Alicia Keys maintains her individuality and compositional ability. She carries herself as if she says,
“I have something to say and I sure can make it sound good.”
So, the imperfectionist knows, “I’m not her and I don’t have to be.” She plays by the heart. Like her
Green Eyes cover, an imperfectionist decides against perfecting every note. She lets acoustics take
over with her roughly resourced instruments and loves the “raw” sound. The constantly shifting key
and personality are beautifully in tune with its message; the situation, the singer: imperfect. This
embrace of imperfection represents more than just a musical choice—it’s a life philosophy.
An imperfectionist says, “I’ve arrived.”
“…Arrived where?”
