Hello record lovers! Thanks for joining me for another week of oldies. At what point do we have to change the name for oldies? Well, I suppose songs from this era are better known as “golden” oldies because it’s 2015 and oldies can now to refer to music played in the 1980s. But what about in a another 20 years or so, when the difference between then and the present time is enough to designate contemporary music as oldies? Do 50s and 60s songs get upgraded to “platinum” oldie status? What about in 300 years! Will people still recognize oldies? Will it matter that We Five’s version of “You Were On My Mind” was named as the number four song of 1965 by Bilboard? Will the tremolo vocal effect in “Crimson & Clover” still have the same haunting impact or will people still know that the liner notes to the album were written by then U.S. Vice President Hubert Humphrey? Will “Wichita Lineman” stand the test of time as the greatest country-pop crossover hit of all time (and don’t argue because of course it is)? When earth dies as sun explodes and the Milky Way collapses will it be to the sentimental simplicity of Sam Cooke’s “Wonderful World”…………?
