I’m back – after two Thursdays in a row when my responsibilities as a professor here at SCAD-Atlanta pulled me away from the radio studio. As I mentioned two posts ago, I was heading to a conference. I made a presentation to other professors from around the country at the foundation studies national conference in Savannah. It went very well and I plan to have the opportunity to do it again. Regardless, it’s good to be back here in the Factory with some new Fuzz to play for myself and all my wonderful listeners.
The sounds of sweet psychedelia is what was spiraling around the Fuzz Factory this past week. In the last few years, there really has been a lot of fantastic neo-psychedelic sounds coming out from bands from the United States and all corners of the world. I’m plotting an entire show this summer based on the genre. In the meantime, I played a few of these gems on the show along with other brand new songs. I also featured Ride and the Jesus & Mary Chain.
So yeah, tonight the Compare/Contrast feature on this Fuzz Factory was Ride and the Jesus & Mary Chain. Two bands that were a part of the first wave of true new psychedelic alternative rock. Both hailed from the United Kingdom and elements of psychedelic rock influenced and appeared within their music. Other that that, they were quite diverse. The Jesus & Mary Chain psychedelia was like an amped up garage/punk sound. The psychedelia of Ride was set to a slower tempo with a somewhat majestic arrangement that ushered in the psychedelic alternative rock subgenre of shoegaze.
The Fuzz Factory is a rock & roll program filled with guitar-centric rock & roll featuring fat riffs, funky grooves and psychedelic pop twists from the last 30 years. If you like rock & roll, listen to the Fuzz Factory. Tell your rock & roll friends too. If your ears could smile they would.
