SCAD Student Survival Guide

As a SCAD student you are going to experience so many things over the course of a quarter. To some people that may sound like a short amount of time, to others it may seem like a while. I can safely say that it is both. 10 weeks will seem like it goes by so slowly but once you get to the other side you’ll be wondering where the time went. You’re going to experience lots of different things in the span of one quarter and having good playlists on your side can be a huge help. So consider this a playlist survival guide.

First off everyone should have a good mood playlist. When the vibes are good you need to keep them going, and the right playlist can do just that. Some upbeat feel-good songs are perfect for this kind of playlist. I recommend bands like One Direction or Passion Pit. I usually listen to this playlist when I walk to/from class or when I work on homework with friends.

The next playlist you should have is a chill mix. Everyone needs some good background music when they’re enjoying leisure time or when they’re focused on something. I like slower songs that aren’t too complex. Groups like Lana Del Ray or Fleet Foxes can be perfect for this type of playlist. I enjoy this type of music when I’m reading or if I’m working on a project/presentation late at night.

An exercise playlist is another very important one to have at your disposal. Sometimes all it takes to motivate you to get moving is some good music. High energy songs with positive lyrics work best for me. I recommend artists like Kesha and Imagine Dragons. This playlist is perfect for in the gym or getting off campus and taking a walk/run.

A playlist I find helpful to have is a sad mood mix. SCAD is a lot, both mentally and physically, and sometimes it can feel like too much. One of the best things I have found to help cope when things get overwhelming is to have a playlist that feels safe. Songs that you can just let things out to and feel lighter afterwards. I like artists such as Lewis Capaldi and David Kushner. Sometimes I will take a walk or go sit somewhere calm and listen to my music to take a quick breather whenever I need one.

Now these few playlists are certainly not the only playlists you should have, but these are a good starting point. Music is one of the most complex and diverse art forms out there and its purpose is to be enjoyed. Build playlists, share music with people, and listen to what the world has to offer. And don’t forget to listen to SCAD Atlanta Radio too.
