An up-and-coming sensation, the artist Sombr, has made shockwaves in the music industry throughout the last year. I had the pleasure of attending the electrifying show during their Atlanta stop on the band’s, “The Late Nights & Young Romance Tour.” If you were to ask me what I thought, as the article’s title suggests, the band may be called Sombr, but the performance could be described as anything but that.
The concert opened with a fun intro, reminiscent of the beginning of a late-night show. A theme that carried throughout the rest of the concert, including a segment where Sombr does a fake interview. The production shared aspects of Sabrina Carpenter’s “Short and Sweet” tour which framed the concert as its own production. It set the tone for the entire concert, reminding me of a mix between Arctic Monkeys and Conan Gray.
The setlist was spectacular, starting out with the upbeat song, “I Wish I Knew How To Quit You”. The crowd was ecstatic, and the band matched their energy tenfold. As the show progressed, the songs painted a myriad of stories and outstanding sound. The lead singer, Sombr, has a hilariously entertaining personality that produces a fun, welcoming environment. Throughout the amazing performance, the band also had fun little breaks to interact with the fans. A particularly hilarious segment included asking a fan to come on stage and call their ex, which was a show in itself.
As the concert came to a close, the band continued giving their all. Ending their set with their two most popular songs, “Back to Friends” and “12 to 12”. Fans sang along to every word as the band brought the songs to life on stage. The lights told their own story during these songs, with a disco ball illuminating the entire concert venue. The band gave the performance their all, and it was amplified by the energy from their fans.
Not only did I have the pleasure of attending the concert, but I also got to speak with the drummer, Mitch Prewitt, after the show. Prewitt gave some fascinating insight into the life of the band on tour, from behind the scenes of the show to the snacks they prefer. He sat through silly question after silly question that I asked him and answered each one enthusiastically. He talked excitedly about the performance, claiming that Atlanta is one of the band’s favorite cities to perform in, citing the crowd to be especially enthusiastic. While I tried my hardest to get him to promise to play here again next year, I suppose only time will tell.
Until then, you can find the band on various stops along their European leg of their tour, or catch their latest performance on SNL this past Saturday. Along with this, you can now purchase the band’s first full-length album, “I Barely Know Her,” on their website or at your local retailers. The band truly has something special going for them, and I am excited to follow their journey as they continue to grow and chart their own path.
