While audiences did not need an in-depth understanding of the lore to enjoy the concert itself, those familiar with the backstory were rewarded with a deeper, richer experience. Each visual cue, lyric, and dramatic moment on stage carried added weight, transforming the performance into something far more than a typical live show—it became the final chapter of a story years in the making.

I attended the band’s 17th stop of their tour in Birmingham, Alabama, with my good friend and hardcore Twenty One Pilots fan, Zoë Schroeder. From the very first moment, it was clear this was not going to be an ordinary concert. The show opened with Dun drumming the electric track Overcompensate. What began as a long, suspenseful intro slowly built tension throughout the arena, drawing the crowd in and refusing to let go. That tension exploded into one unforgettable moment when Joseph sprinted across the stage and leapt off a piano just as pyrotechnics erupted all around him. It was chaotic, thrilling, and perfectly timed—a statement that the night was going to be intense from start to finish.
From there, the band gave the audience no time to recover. Song after song followed in rapid succession, each packed with high energy, dramatic lighting, and striking visuals that elevated the music beyond sound alone. Every transition felt intentional, every moment carefully crafted, yet still raw and explosive. The performance never stalled; instead, it surged forward, pulling the crowd along with it.
You might be thinking, “Nova, you’ve only mentioned two people in the band, wouldn’t that get boring to watch?” The answer is an emphatic no. What the band may lack in numbers, they more than make up for in performance quality. Through the lore they act out on stage, their exquisite musicality, and the constantly evolving stage visuals, the experience feels full and exciting. By the end of the show, you don’t feel like you’ve watched two performers—you feel like you’ve been part of something much larger.
Even during slower segments of the concert, whether it was a softer song or moments of direct audience interaction, Joseph and Dun never let the energy fade. They kept the crowd emotionally invested, hanging onto every note and every word.
After an absolutely insane 28-song set list, the band closed the night with the same beautiful song they have ended every tour with since their very first concert: Trees. The song begins quietly, with both members still positioned on the main stage, allowing the moment to breathe. Its lyrics express a desperate longing for connection, mirroring the emotions concertgoers experience throughout the night.
About halfway through the song, Joseph and Dun trade the stage with two elevated platforms carried by fans in the pit. Each platform holds a drum, blurring the line between performer and audience in a powerful display of unity. As the song reaches its explosive climax, the band drums in perfect unison while confetti erupts from every direction, engulfing the venue in sound and motion. When the song ended, the overwhelming feeling wasn’t relief—it was the desire for just one more moment, one more song, one more chance to stay in that world a little longer.
