Open Hearted: “A PERFECT WORLD TOUR” Review

In a perfect world, we’d have it all figured out.

Born in Sydney, but raised in the outlands of the New South Wales City, Broken Hill, The Kid LAROI flips the script from his leaked, scrapped album, “Watch This!” to an intimate, vulnerable display of vocal and melodic versatility in “BEFORE I FORGET (DELUXE)”. Featured in “A PERFECT WORLD TOUR”, the deluxe album follows the ups and downs of maintaining and, ultimately, losing love in the seemingly perfect world of fame. His lyrical flow, soulful rifts, and masterful storytelling drew a nearly sold-out crowd into a larger-than-life story that encouraged clinging tightly to love, community, and the zeal of life.

Crowds of people from all styles and walks of life flooded the balcony and floor of the Coca-Cola Roxy to experience another dimension that put screams, mosh pits, and tears in the same sentence. The Atlanta leg of the tour represented the simple yet complex sentiment of being open-hearted. The Kid LAROI commanded the stage by harnessing the power of the “heart on a sleeve” mentality. Regardless of how life pans out, he encouraged the audience to reflect deeply on the past with the utmost goal of getting back to love.

To open the gates of this robust new world, men in hazmat suits swarmed the stage, prepping 360° cameras, LED panels, and mic stands over a meticulous, almost scientific instructional narrative. The prep now complete, The Kid LAROI bursts through backstage with an irreplicable swagger for “ME + YOU“, a song tackling the concept of the world eroding and winning against the love between two people. Tears flowed, and emotions continued to rise as he shifted into even more emotional pieces, like “NEVER CAME BACK” and “BLEED“. All of these emotions swirled into a galactic shift as the stage transitioned into a constellation, showing that the marks left by past explosions can create beautiful future paths.

As all the tears began to dry, The Kid LAROI turned the tables with a fan-favorite that he proudly claims as being Atlanta-inspired: “BABY I’M BACK“. The once deep blue constellation brightened into a never-ending dawn sky, speaking to the redemption following the pain of heartbreak. Although tearful moments continued to be sprinkled between, with songs like “BACK WHEN YOU WERE MINE” and “RATHER BE“, The Kid LAROI swapped tears for party energy as he teleported across the stage with an effortless lyrical sync to “DIVA” and the revolving red strobe lights.

The energy was at an all-time high, and somehow The Kid LAROI managed to shift it for a third time, leading into Act III of a nearly three-hour set. In the strategic silence, the audience waited with bated breath as he reemerged to perform a heartfelt, live-looping version of “MAYBE I’M WRONG“. With every layer of harmony and each delicately placed piano chord, he laid down his pride and acknowledged his past imperfections in a way that left the audience in awe.

The Kid LAROI remained full of surprises as he continued to stack his setlist with fan-favorites like “WITHOUT YOU“, “A COLD PLAY“, and “STAY“. One of the best surprises of the night was his surprise guest star for “STAY”. Originally thought to be Justin Bieber, LAROI introduced Connor Tomlinson, an Atlanta native and fan-favorite from “Love on the Spectrum”, as his chosen guest to deliver a dynamic, yet heart-warming performance. As the screams began to fade, LAROI jumped off stage to embrace his fans in a symbolic rendition of “HOLD STILL“. He proved that it takes a village to keep one standing as he sang, standing on the barricade, with the help of guards and fans alike. By breaking down the barrier between musician and fan, LAROI proved that a perfect world is open-hearted and open-minded.

The three-hour set mark loomed close, and the audience still begged for more as The Kid LAROI rested backstage during a short break. At this point, nearly every anticipated song had been covered with the exception of one: “NIGHTS LIKE THIS“. The voices of the audience, combined in a unison choral chant of the phrase, “NIGHTS LIKE THIS”, brought LAROI back out for a final iconic run-through of this hit song from his 2023 album, “THE FIRST TIME“. The beat dropped, and the flashing lights, along with LAROI’s contagious stage presence, created a massive party that felt simultaneously familiar and new. In this perfect world, we didn’t have it all figured out, but we learned it was more important to laugh, cry, love, and, most importantly, live life to its fullest. We can’t wait for the world to be perfect, but we can do our best to make it perfectly flawed with an open heart toward a better future.
